i should say, for starters, that although i like to have more friends (never hurts to have more friends, right?) -- people to do things with -- go to opera, baseball, plays, a bite, whatever -- when it comes to romance, i'm looking for...permanent -- love, marriage, family, children -- and if you have your own, all the better looking for...my little corner of happiness...in this...'crazy old world' -- or whatever that line is...from 'casablanca' well,...o ne step...at a time about me -- this feels like writing a resumé (a resumé for the heart, I guess) -- but...it is the way of things, isn't it? okay, here goes i am... -- deep breath -- it's a long list -- I am...smart, loving, kind, affectionate, a gentle soul, a good guy, patient, understanding, a good listener (when there's something, or somebody, worth listening to), steady, solid, reliable, easy-going (does everybody say that? -- well, I'm really easy going), light, serious (but “don’t sweat the small stuff – and it’s all small stuff”), silly, playful (especially with words), expressive and verbose (if that weren't obvious), generally happy, sensitive, honest, thoughtful, astute, childlike, a kid at heart, wise to the ways of the world, guileless, enthusiastic, curious, down-to-earth, earthy. Did I mention modest and humble? well, as baseball great dizzy dean said, It ain't braggin' if it's true. I'm almost perfect -- almost i've been around, and I'll go around again -- around and around we go, "where we'll stop, nobody knows." "these are a few of my favorite things": thunderstorms, lightning, the sound of water in nature (when it's raining, I crack windows and doors open); butterflies, colors, commas, the moon; beautiful skies, weather, chocolate; sleeping and dreaming; reading great books (i'm picky – i'm devoted to reading the classics -- this goes for movies, musicals, plays, music (the great american songbook, opera, mahler, i grew up on the beatles); baseball (I'm a gourmand...of this...most beautiful game in the world); eating (my favorite cuisines are italian, vietnamese, middle eastern & indian), soft skin (caressing and kissing) children are an especial source of joy for me (I shudder, inside., when a child gets yelled at, and, especially, in anger) -- i love the sounds of children -- laughter, crying, talking, the pitter-patter of little feet running -- i spend as much time as I can with my nephews and niece -- doing anything -- walking, talking, rhyming, singing, riding in the car, playing board games, with a ball, biking, volunteering in their schools, whatever as for work, I'm a bookseller and writer -- i was a journalist, for 20+ years -- worked and lived in washington, jerusalem, london, boston, baghdad -- i'm looking to teach at the college level, and, so, am working to get a master's degree in history -- money's never been hugely important to me, but...I know its value, and I've got nothing against it -- although…i'm not impressed by money and power well, that's everything there is to know about me -- that's it -- nothing else to know -- so, no need to meet, no need for a first date, no need to "get to know each other," or spend time -- not to mention, a lifetime -- that's it, move on, go home, nothing to see here what? -- are you still reading? i said, go home -- go away still here? what's it gonna take? go away -- go home -- go tuck your babies in, and kiss 'em on the head you're still here?! that's it! -- i give up! i guess...i'll just have to leave, myself not that...i can leave myself -- i've tried that -- doesn't work
